Smeg FAB28UP Review – Cream Retro Fridge
We hope you find our Smeg FAB28 review useful, so please read on for full details. We give this Smeg 50’s style retro fridge 2.5 stars out of a possible 5. The full review is below, plus we have Smeg price comparison charts so you can find the best price Smeg FAB28UP refrigerator deals online.
The reason we don’t give the Smeg full marks is down to some of the functionality lacking when compared to other refrigerators – having said that, you are probably considering to buy a Smeg due to the fashion and design style rather than the day to day mechanics – here’s what we think:
Overview of Features
- 9.22 Cubic Feet of Capacity
- Antibacterial Interior for Easy Wipe Clean
- An Interior Light
- 3 Adjustable Glass Shelves
- 1 Bottle Storage Shelf
Smeg 1950’s Retro Style Fridge Design
It goes without saying really, but look at the photos of the Smeg FAB28… it really does look beautiful. The heritage behind the Smeg company goes back as far as 1948 when the first ever Smeg refrigerator was developed, and in truth the design style hasn’t changed a lot since – and why should it? Smeg fridge freezers are designed to look like 1950’s fridges and this model is no exception with the curved corners and design aesthetics.
The refrigerator door is held shut using an extremely strong magnetic seal. This is great because the door will never come open on its own accord, but the flipside of that is the sheer amount of strength you will need to pull it open. Okay, so that’s a slight exaggeration, but the heavy door does definitely need a little bit more elbow grease to open it when compared against traditional fridge freezers. We put that down to a sign of quality though and the impressive Italian design.
Freezer Section is Quite Small
The Smeg freezer section is not the largest, but then this fridge only has a capacity of just over 9 cubic feet so some allowances do need to be made. Due to the small freezer space, larger families and households may need to use another freezer unit elsewhere – for example in the garage. You will be pleased to hear though that this Smeg refrigerator does run very quietly, being one of the most unobtrusive sounding fridge freezers available on the appliance market.
Inside the Smeg FAB28 freezer you will find a an ice cube tray as there is no external Smeg ice maker or dispenser including in this unit. If you want a refrigerator that does have this function, but still looks stylish then we can recommend our Amana ASD2522WRB review elsewhere on the Refrigerator Reviews 4 U website.
Design Style and Looks Over Functionality?
We’ll be honest with you… only buy this Smeg refrigerator if you value design and style over standard functionality. Whilst the Smeg FAB28UP retro fridge does look amazing externally, it’s not as good as it could be on the inside and interior.
A lot of the inner components on this cream Smeg retro fridge freezer are made from plastics that don’t seem as durable as they could be. Whilst nothing broke during our review sessions, we believe that over time you might experience some cracking on the shelves if the Smeg is handled roughly – which is a particularly consideration for those who have younger children in the kitchen.
Things to Know Before You Buy the Smeg Retro Refrigerator
If you do decide to buy the Smeg FAB28UP model you will receive some instructions inside the refrigerator telling you to make sure that it sits at a slightly tilted angle backwards. This is to accommodate for the heavy door and will also reduce the chances of internal icing and frosting. Whilst this might sound odd, we are talking a matter of millimetres and this can be achieved using small pieces of plastic or card underneath the front bottom feet – and don’t worry – this won’t show or be visible.
Measure Up Your Kitchen to Fit the Smeg FAB28 Fridge
Make sure that you also fully measure up your kitchen before you purchase, as the cream retro Smeg fridge freezer will need twelve and a half inches space on the hinged door site – this will let the door open properly and ensure that it doesn’t scrape against the walls. This will probably be a small concession to make though if you are planning on designing a retro kitchen – and if you want more information then click here for retro kitchen design ideas.
Cream Smeg Retro Fridge Review – Conclusion
It looks fantastic, but isn’t the highest of quality when examined internally. If anything does happen to break over time then please be aware that Smeg replacement parts can be expensive. We rate the Smeg FAB28UP with 2.5 stars out of a possible 5. If you want to buy one today please use our price comparison tab.
